The Area
This is Canadian Shield country, granite hills and forest rolling out in every direction, with a view worth stopping for practically wherever you climb. It's exactly the kind of landscape hikers, ATV riders, and snowmobilers keep coming back for, trails that actually go somewhere, and views all around once you're up.
ON THE WATER
The dock is where most mornings start. Coffee first, then a swim that wakes you up faster than the coffee did. A canoe, a rowboat, and a paddle board are around whenever the mood strikes. Bringing your own boat is easy too, there's a public launch on the lake a short drive from the cottage.
Fishing is good on Wollaston Lake: bass (largemouth and smallmouth), lake trout, northern pike, and yellow perch. Bring your own gear, or grab what you need from the bait shop right in town. Once the lake freezes over, ice fishing takes its place, same lake, same fish, just colder and a lot quieter.
On the Trails
The Coe Hill Riders keep over 600 km of local ATV trails mapped and groomed, part of the province-wide OFATV network (a trail permit is required, buy it where you ride). One trail connects just up the road from the cottage, easy to get onto. The interactive trail map shows exactly where they all run.
Snowmobiling is a separate trail network, not the same trails switched over for winter. The Old Hastings Snow Riders groom more than 350 km of their own routes through Coe Hill, Bancroft, and the surrounding area, with their own permit and their own interactive trail map.
Around the Property
The path winds from the cottage down to the water, a fire pit and a cluster of Muskoka chairs along the way. There's enough room that everyone finds their own spot without really trying.
Fall colours are worth the trip on their own. Winter brings a whole different kind of quiet.
The Pace
There's no agenda here. A weekend turns into a rhythm on its own: water, fire, food, sleep, repeat. The point is fewer things to do, not more.
